A small group of neighborhood leaders hosted by the South Kansas City Alliance met with Captain Ron Legg of South Patrol, and several others from the police department along with Jackson County Prosecutor, Jean Peters-Baker, 6th District Councilmembers, Scott Taylor and Kevin McManus, staff from Project ReStart and Dina Newman with the UMKC Center for Neighborhoods.
Trail Safety Action Items: Scott & Kevin briefed us on an ordinance that will limit the hours of some parks & Indian Creek Trail (not allowed from 11:00pm-5:00am). See Ordinance #170388 below. This will give the police tools to use to remove people. The Ordinance is going before the City’s Public Safety Committee meeting on Wednesday, June 7th at 10:00am at City Hall on the 26th Floor. Please bring a neighbor and be prepared to testify (hopefully in support of the ordinance). We need a strong showing of support for this ordinance from citizens so that it will pass the council vote when it’s heard. We will try to post a petition and send it by email for those not able to attend in person.
We were also made aware that Mayor Sly James will be hosting a trail event in South Kansas City in June that we will add on to in order to make sure neighborhoods have information on safety tips, setting up neighborhood watches – and to get the most recent update from the police department. Major Louie Perez and Captain Legg will let us know the date, and we’ll share it.
