DESCRIPTION:Please join us and hear KCMO Police Chief Stacey Graves give us the latest updates on KCPD’s strategies and initiatives to reduce homicides and other violent crimes and to reduce burglaries\, vehicle thefts and other property crimes at the 6 p.m. Monday\, May 11\, public meeting in the community room in the front building of the South Patrol Police Campus\, 9701 Marion Park Dr.\, sponsored by the South Kansas City Alliance. \n \nGraves and other KCPD officials will explain the most recent citywide and south Kansas City crime trends and specific steps residents and business owners can take to keep their homes\, businesses and neighborhoods safer and also answer audience questions. \nShe also will discuss KCPD staffing levels and proposed state legislation currently being considered by the Missouri General Assembly that can significantly improve public safety if it is passed and signed into law by the governor. \nRepresentatives of the KCMO Fire Department will give away new smoke detectors to city residents at the meeting and also explain the Department’s membership program that covers out-of-pocket costs for medically necessary ambulance service for city residents.  (Medicaid recipients are not eligible for the membership program.) \nUpdates from other public officials and community groups also are generally given at SKCA public meetings.

DESCRIPTION:Top KCMO city officials and the Superintendents of the Center & Hickman Mills school districts will give factual explanations and answer audience questions about ballot measures that will be considered by voters in the April 7 election at this month’s public meeting of the South Kansas City Alliance at 6 p.m. Monday\, March 9\, in the community room in the front building of the South Patrol Police Campus\, 9701 Marion Park Dr. \n \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nCity Manager Mario Vasquez and Assistant City Manager Tammy Queen will explain the proposed 5-year extension of the city’s 1% earnings tax which is paid by city residents and by nonresidents who work within the city limits and is the largest single source of revenue for the city’s general fund. \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nCenter School District Superintendent Troy Hogg will explain that district’s proposed no tax increase $29 million bond issue for improving schools & classrooms\, athletic facilities & playgrounds and upgrading security and its proposed no tax increase change in its property tax levy which is estimated  to increase the district’s operating levy for expenses such as teacher salaries by 17 cents per $100 of assessed valuation and decrease its debt service levy by the same amount. \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nHickman Mills School District Superintendent Dennis Carpenter will explain that district’s no tax increase $20 million bond issue which will include funding for renovating and improving school facilities throughout the district and paying off prior obligations that is expected to actually decrease the district’s debt service levy by 30 cents per $100 of assessed valuation over the life of the bonds.  He also will explain its proposed no tax increase change in its property tax levy which is estimated to increase that district’s operating levy for expenses such as salaries by 30 cents per $100 of assessed valuation and decrease its debt service levy by the same amount. \nOther area elected officials regularly attend SKCA public meetings to let persons attending know about current issues and upcoming events\, and area nonprofit organizations are always welcome to announce their upcoming events.

DESCRIPTION:  \nTop Jackson County elected officials will highlight the program at February’s public meeting of the South Kansas City Alliance at 6 p.m. Monday\, February 9\, in the community room in the front building of the South Patrol Police Campus\, 9701 Marion Park Dr. \nNew Jackson County Executive Phil LeVota and new Chairman of the Jackson County Legislature Manny Abarca will both speak at the meeting about important county issues and respond to audience questions. \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nLeVota’s term as the county’s chief executive officer will run through 2026\, and he is expected to discuss improvements in the county’s property tax assessment and reassessment procedures\, construction of the new county jail\, county funding for high priority street and bridge improvements and county park facilities and ongoing efforts to keep the Kansas City Royals playing in Jackson County as well as other important county issues. \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nAbarca who was recently selected to replace DaRon McGee as Chairman of the County Legislature will also comment on these issues and discuss the county’s program to provide significant funding to local nonprofit organizations that serve county residents which recently provided funding to the Grandview Education Foundation for its Cover to Cover reading program that purchases books for students in the Grandview School District. \nAlso speaking at the public meeting will be Triveece Penelton\, community engagement leader\, and Selina Zapata Bur\, KCMO project manager\, for Reconnecting the East Side\, an organization seeking to address any negative impacts caused by the construction of U.S. 71 Highway dividing KCMO neighborhoods on its east from those on its west. \n \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nGoals include listening carefully to area residents and developing a comprehensive land use plan that meets their needs and desires which will encourage economic development and job creation\, adequate green space\, quality housing and traffic safety and beginning to implement such improvements in the near future. \nOther area elected officials regularly attend SKCA public meetings to let those attending know about upcoming issues and events\, and area nonprofit organizations are always welcome to announce their upcoming events. \n

DESCRIPTION:Please join us at our South Kansas City Alliance public meeting at 6 p.m. Monday\, January 12\, in the community room in the front building of the South Patrol Police Campus\, 9701 Marion Park Dr.\, to hear about important public safety updates from top law enforcement officials and about new initiatives to strengthen neighborhoods and area nonprofit charitable organizations.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJackson County Prosecuting Attorney Melesa Johnson will report on her accomplishments in reducing crime by successfully prosecuting criminals during her first year in office and how citizens\, businesses and organizations can best work with her office to combat crime.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJohnson has made prosecuting domestic violence a top priority since taking office.  Also\, the latest statistics show she has filed more state criminal charges for celebratory and reckless gunfire within or into city limits than any other county prosecutor in the state since the recent enactment of Missouri’s Blair’s Law named to honor the memory of 11-year-old Blair Shanahan Lane who died here after being struck by such gunfire while playing in the yard during the July 4 holiday in 2011.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSouth Patrol Assistant Division Commander Captain Jeffrey Littlejohn will explain the significant drops in several categories of serious crimes from 2024 to 2025 throughout the city and also discuss crime trends in south Kansas City.  Citywide\, stolen autos fell 32% from 2024 to 2025\, non-fatal shootings fell 31%\, robberies fell 27%\, property damage fell 19% and stealing fell 15%.  Homicides only fell 5%\, but that was still the lowest number of homicides since 2018.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJackson County Legislature Chairman DaRon McGee will give an update on county operations and explain the county’s recent approval of sizable grants for nonprofit charitable organizations that serve residents throughout the county.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKCMO 5th District-at-Large City Councilman Darrell Curls will report on a new resolution he sponsored to provide increased dedicated funding for city neighborhoods for neighborhood improvement projects.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLarry Beaty\, Chairman of the Jackson County COMBAT Commission that oversees the county’s antidrug efforts\, will give a brief overview of the program’s work that helps finance drug enforcement activities in Jackson County by law enforcement agencies and organizations’ rehabilitation activities for recovering users of illegal drugs.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLawrence Marsh\, a retired economics professor at Notre Dame University and member of the Board of Trustees at Avila University\, will speak briefly about how the prospects for economic success for all residents of our country are intertwined and how we all do better when we all do better. Marsh has donated a total of 20 copies of two books he has written on this subject that will be given away at the meeting through a drawing.  The hard cover “Optimal Money Flow” was published in 2020\, and an updated paperback version “Money Flow in a Dynamic Economy” was published in 2024.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArea nonprofit organizations are always welcome to announce their upcoming events.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nUpcoming events
