The Noble and Gregory Food Forest is a community-based urban agriculture and land stewardship initiative located in Kansas City, Missouri (64132). The project is intended to convert an underutilized parcel into a structured, perennial food system that improves local food access, stabilizes the landscape, and contributes to long-term neighborhood revitalization. Its primary purpose is to establish a low-maintenance, self-sustaining food production system that provides fresh produce to nearby residents while enhancing the ecological and social value of the property. The site will be developed using permaculture design principles, organized into approximately fifteen circular planting guilds and a 60-foot border guild. Each guild integrates fruit and nut trees with supporting species such as nitrogen fixers, pollinator plants, and groundcovers to create a resilient, layered ecosystem. Soil fertility will be supported through on-site composting and integration with a small-scale rabbit colony, providing both organic fertilizer and a supplemental source of protein. The design emphasizes durability, efficient land use, and reduced long-term input requirements, ensuring the site remains productive without intensive ongoing intervention. The project is structured to deliver measurable community benefits, including increased access to fresh food, improved neighborhood aesthetics, and opportunities for informal education in food production and land stewardship. Produce from the site is intended to be distributed within the local community at low or no cost, supporting broader efforts to strengthen neighborhood stability and resident engagement. The visible transformation of the lot is also expected to contribute to reduced blight and increased neighborhood pride. Development will occur in phases, beginning with site preparation and soil building, followed by initial planting and establishment of support species, and progressing toward full system maturity over multiple growing seasons. The long-term plan prioritizes clear maintenance practices, responsible land use, and sustained stewardship aligned with the expectations of the South Kansas City Alliance.
