SKCA May 2024 General Meeting

May 13 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Be among the first to hear the details of SAVE KC – the Kansas City Police Department’s newest initiative to reduce violent crime with a focus on significantly reducing both the city’s terrible per capita homicide rate and non-fatal shootings at the South Kansas City Alliance’s public meeting at 6 p.m. Monday, May 13, in the rear building of the South Patrol Police Campus, 9701 Marion Park Dr.

Deputy Police Chief Joseph Mabin and Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker who both serve on the governing board for SAVE KC will explain how it will use a refined focused deterrence model that focuses on individuals and groups known to be involved in violence.

Focused deterrence was utilized with some success several years ago as part of the No Violence Alliance (NOVA) effort before being dropped and the strategy has achieved notable success in other regions.

Many law enforcement officials feel the new effort which will include many more federal, state and community partners that can provide more comprehensive services to potential offenders and more coordinated enforcement efforts when necessary will be much more effective than NOVA was.

The process uses call-ins to get the message directly in a face-to-face manner to persistent violent offenders and their associates that specific social services are available to help them get their lives back on track but swift and sure penalties will come their way if they continue to be involved in violent crime. The first such call in meeting is expected to take place shortly.

Also speaking and being honored for his service to the community will be former Missouri State Senator Greg Razer who recently resigned from his 7th District State Senate seat representing much of the southwest portion of Jackson County to accept a gubernatorial appointment to the 3-member State Tax Commission that oversees county assessors.

The Commission is the highest governmental organization that taxpayers can appeal their property assessments to before going to court. Razer will explain how the appeal process works.
An 8-year veteran of the Missouri General Assembly, Razer also will give his views on some of the greatest challenges facing Missouri.
